The efficacy of preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV-1 prevention has been demonstrated amongst serodiscordant couples. Researchers in this study wanted to determine that couples where the woman (whether HIV-negative or HIV-positive) used the hormonal contraceptive depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DPMA) were as protected from HIV transmission as those not using hormonal contraception. PrEP efficacy did not differ in those couples where the woman used DPMA versus those where the woman was not using hormonal contraception. This demonstrates a possibility of women continuing to use hormonal contraception (specifically DPMA) for prevention of unintended pregnancy and PrEP for prevention of HIV-1 transmission.
