The Illinois Prenatal Syphilis Act (410 ILCS 320/1) requires health care providers to screen all pregnant individuals for syphilis infection during pregnancy and report congenital syphilis cases within 24 hours.
Health care providers should:
- Screen all pregnant individuals for syphilis infection during the first prenatal visit and during the third trimester
- Perform an additional test or tests if any blood test indicates a positive or inconclusive result
- Avoid discharging infants from the hospital unless the syphilis serologic status of the birth parent has been determined at least one time during pregnancy and preferably again in the third trimester
- Re-test any individual, regardless of risk, who delivers a stillborn infant after 20 weeks gestation
