Prenatal Syphilis Act Amendment Effective January 1, 2026

Effective January 1, 2026, all health care professionals who attend to a pregnant woman in Illinois shall conduct a test for perinatal syphilis at the time of the first examination, and again during the third trimester (NEW: between 27 and 32 weeks) to ensure appropriate treatment can be administered (Public Act 104-0071). Appropriate treatment (>) 30 days prior to delivery prevents transmission of syphilis to the fetus at delivery. This amendment is a public health response to the rising cases of congenital syphilis in Illinois.
